Western Australia covers an area of over 2.5 million square kilometres and much of this vast country is dry arid scrublands and heath. During the dry season, this land is harsh and unappealing to most, but after the sporadic rains, these areas become a sea of flowering plants. Areas of Western Australia have the highest concentration of flowering plant species in the world. This sheer diversity is only matched by the fauna that has evolved to exist in this fascinating land.

As this country begins to dry out, the fauna of these areas begin to concentrate about the scattered waterholes. Sitting by one of these in the early morning or late afternoon can present an amazing array of species, in particular birds. The vigilant person might also see a monitor patrolling the shoreline looking for an opportunistic feed or maybe catch a glimpse of a Steindachner’s Turtle as it surfaces to grab a gulp of air.

Dry Country

Driving through this country can also present some great, unexpected sights. A Bustard moving off through the low shrubs and Spinifex, a Thorny Devil warming itself on the roadside or a flock of Crimson Chats on the powerlines. These sights and more make every day, a great day to be alive.

The people who choose to live in these sometime very remote areas quite often open their doors to the passing traveller and offer a form of hospitality rarely found anywhere else in the world. Gondwana Connection utilises this wonderful home/station stay opportunity wherever possible.
